"The Hunted"
By Matthew Bridge and Hannah Dodsworth...

Location Used

Shire Hill

After looking at several locations, we decided to use Shire Hill, also known as Shire Brook. We loved this location as it is an easy walk and surrounded by wood. Although the hill is mainly wooded, the base of the hill is open fields making long shots easy and effective. We were able to capture shots of the hill to set the scene along with close ups of the wooded area. A mix of tree height and size gave a beautifully creepy depth to our shots. The scattered natural lighting made it a joy to edit and film whilst on the hill.

With many dips and fallen trees on the floor, high angle shots and low angle shots were made easy. With a relatively litter free floor the wood had an uninhabited feel to it. As the opening shots are mostly of myself running, easy treading was needed for health and safety. Any dangerous looking areas were not used to film. Any harmful litter was moved or avoided when filming.

Audience

Our main audience is teens. Aged between 15-19.
Our film would be certificate 15.

To address our audience we have used a well known film song, "In the House, in a Heartbeat" by John Murphy, in our titles. This song has been used in popular Hollywood busters such as 28Days Later and Twilight.

Our main character, the only figure seen in the opening titles, is dressed in fashionable clothing with an up to date hair style. This automatically creates a teen persona for the character, this is relatable to the audience.

By using "Art House" styled editing we have given the effect of new and original filming to our product, appealing to the new style of Low Budget films that are becoming popular.

Personally I feel that by almost over editing our product we have created a new style of horror film. A style which is more up to date and stays clear of clichés. I would definite watch our film and I am a teen. I have also showed our film to several of my friends, aged between 15-18, who have said they found is creepy, original and hooking. Exactly the effect we hoped to create with out editing and unusual use of camera angles when filming.

Filming Dates

Dates for filming/editing, when, where and what happened on theses days.

21 February 3-6pm (Sun set at 6pm) -
First day of filming on location. We filmed over 70 shots from several angles. Loosing light was our main problem. The weather was sunning with few clouds making great silhouettes when filming under the trees. Shots of myself, used in the opening, running were all shot on this day.

22 February 9:30am-12:00pm -
Once again sunny day with good lighting. We filmed on Shire Hill once again, this time capturing establishing shots along with some close ups of surroundings and plants. Problems we had were the amount of walkers on the Hill as it was day time. We had to wait politely for passer bys to continue out of shot.

1 March 1:30am-13:15pm -
This was our first day of editing. We decided to use Matthew's laptop to edit our film as both he and I are more comfortable with the editing software. We started by placing our chosen shots in a suitable order.

4 March 9:30pm-12pm -
We now started to add a red tint to our shots. More changing of the shot positions was made along with cutting shots to shorten our running time.

8 March 1:30am-3:15pm -
After shortening most of our shots we began to add on breathing and none diogetic sounds to fit each shot.

11March 9:30am-1:15pm -
After editing our product and feeling happy with the editing so far, we showed our work to Mrs. After hearing her response we began to edit our film some more. We added extremely short shots of plants, hands and myself running into longer shots to create a some what subliminal message feel to the piece.

15 March 1:30pm-3:15 -
Once again we showed our work to Mrs. after she said what she liked she added we should add some alternate feeling shots, as our shots are very fast paced. We decided to think of slower shots that could relate to the narrative and opening. We thought of:
  • Police discovering a body in the woods
  • Police tape with flashing lights
  • Graves, stills also useful for titles to be placed on
18 March 9:30am-12pm - On this day we decided to film some short still shots of graves to edit the titles over. However this footage was not used.

22 March 9:30am-12pm -
After deciding against Mrs.'s comments as we felt they would distract the audience from the fast paced opening, we added our titles to our film. Placing them before any shots are shown with music and eerie fades, on a black screen with ghost like white writing.

25 March -
I was absent on this day, however filming and editing is now completed.

Changes Made whilst Filming

When filming on our first day we decided that the task at hand, our multiple shot opening, was far to long and ambitious. We felt that spending so much time on getting the shots we would lack time to edit our film. As the task is only an opening, lasting just two minuets long, our original idea would become far longer than required.

Some of our film narrative has stayed the same along with locations and genre. The music, cast, theme, props, and story board have all been changed. Our main reason for change were timing, difficulty of location, travel and cost.

Due to the large amount of props and cast needed for our original idea we had to make changes. We discovered that the cost of the old prop list would of been over £150. The cost of travel to the difficult to react locations would of been more. As this is a none budget film we had no choice but to change our ideas, some locations and the amount of people needed.

* Any large changes made to our previous plans are entitled with (Original), and/or red writting, to show the comparison from our changes to our original ideas.

Film Openings- New Task!

Now i have finished my preliminary activity I am watching film openings to collect ideas for my final film. Some openings I am thinking of watching, as my final film will be a horror, are American Haunting, Saw, My Little Eye and Paranormal Activity.

11/02/10

Today's lesson consisted of editing our film. We cut and changed the length of our the clips in our film. This was quiet easy however learning how to use the software on the apple macs took some time.

We all took part in editing our film. tihs gave us an understanding of the editing prosses. I personaly found cuting the clips the most difficult as a mistake could make the whole film wrong.

08/02/10

For this lesson we started filming our preliminary exercises. We began with shoot the shots in order. However found this did not work as some shots took longer to film. This made our timing wrong for each shot. Learning from this we decided to film the last sequences first as they were the most tedious. They also needed an empty room, as we filmed our sots in the college pool room, it was difficult to ensure the room would be unoccupied.

To solve this we filmed whenever we had the chance. When people were in the set we made sure they were silent, to ensure a quality scene.

04/01/10

In our lesson today we began filming by capturing simple shots given to us by our teacher. We collected shots of; people walking, high angles, low angles, over the shoulder shots and a short conversation.

First off we had to locate a suitable place to film our scenes. We had to check for continuity when changing the position of our camera. We also had to ensure that there was no background noise in the clips. For this we choose small, empty locations to capture our shots.

Thursday 4 February 2010

01/02/10

For this lesson we had a discussion a a class on the camera and their maintenance. We learnt how to ;
  • keep the cameras safe
  • keep the cameras clean
  • charge the camenrs
  • put away camer correctly

28/01/10

For our second lesson we started writing up our final story board and time sheet. A time sheet is new to our knowledge. We learnt that it keeps track of our shots and how long she should spend on each shot. This is a good method for time management.

After planning our time and story board we discussed the roles of ;
  • Camera Person
  • Girl
  • Boy
  • Boyfriend

After deciding our roles we began planning our setting and the angles for our shots.

25/01/10

In today's lesson we started our story boards for the preliminary exercise. We decided on a Blind Date theme for our shot film. Shots we are using are;
  • Shot Revers Shot
  • Close Ups
  • Long Shot
  • Panning Shot
  • Mid Shot

We must also display a steady hand when controlling the camera. Another important rule we learnt about was the 180degree rule. This is where the invisible line stops the camera from making the shot seem reversed.
