I watched the openings of 3 horror/thriller films. I wrote notes and my own thoughts about each film. I have added any technique or themes we have used in our own production, that has also been used in the openings below.
The Hills Have Eyes (Short hand Notes):
-Establishing shot, hill/mountain
-Titles on black screen
-Titles before shot of person and of scenery
-Eery man made music
-Breathing is heard along with foot steps
-Close up of people
-Mixed shots of people (close up, mid shot) with long shot of surroundings Many of the shot style in this opening is used in our product. Long shot establishing shots, titles on black screens and man made music, along with breathing and footsteps, are used in the first few seconds of our film, the same as in this film. Close ups mixed with long shots and mid shots are used in the opening sequence of this film similar to ours.
Saw 1 (Short hand Notes):
-Liked to horror themed logo for Twist Picture
-Titles on a black screen
-Quiet music and sounds can be heard
-Dark shadows showed behind title of film (Saw)
-Jumpy and fast paced establishing shot
-No setting revealed until a few seconds in
-Creative editing used with multiple shots
-Blurred transitions
-Fast cuts with montage of shots
-Blurred editing (Point of View, disorientated) -Blurred transitions
-Fast cuts with montage of shots
The use of creative editing is used in our film, the same as in this film. Blurred transitions and focus is used in our film to create disorientation, the same as in the opening here. Fast cuts and montage of shots is also used to create a fast pasted and jumpy feel to the film. We have used many of the more creative editing skills as are used in this opening.
Re-make of Friday the 13th, 2009 (Short hand Notes):
-Logo for New Line Cinema with red tint (horror theme)
-High pitched eery music
-Red tint on Paramount with sharp knife
sounds added in to create effect
sounds added in to create effect
-Fade
-Fast cut to red tinted Platinum Dunes
logo with same high pitched eery music
logo with same high pitched eery music
-Date, type written style, at bottom of the screen
with birds eye view of forest
with birds eye view of forest
-Zoom in to forest, to camp sign setting the scene
We have used less of the theme and style as this opening, however the narrative is similar. Wood setting, teens camping, murder and horrific killings are used both in this film and our product. The use of an enraged victim is also used as the killer in Friday the 13th was once the murdered not the murderer.
